According to data from UNICEF, by the end of August 2021, Bangladesh was hosting more than 890,000 Rohingya refugees in the Cox’s Bazar District. Those fleeing attacks and violence in the 2017 exodus joined around 300,000 people already in Bangladesh from previous waves of displacement, effectively forming the world’s largest informal settlement.
To initiate the local manufacture and availability of Jengu in Bangladesh, Arup contacted and collaborated with Field Ready, an innovative group of non-governmental, not for profit organisations that instigate locally made solutions for humanitarian response. Field Ready contacted Sher-e-Bangla University and along with Arup’s technical team worked with the University’s innovative fabrication lab who in turn collaborated with local fabricators and suppliers around Dhaka to make and test the units.
