The Jengu team has been recognised by the International Society of Neglected Tropical Diseases (ISNTD). The project, which is part of Arup Global Challenge initiative, was awarded for its innovation in water, sanitation and hygiene at the ISNTD Water Awards, held in London, UK, in November 2018.

Working in collaboration with the British Red Cross and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, a team from across Arup including product design, human factors, water and international development have developed a prototype of the handwashing facility which will be tested from next year.

Martin Shouler, (Arup Public Health Engineering Leader) also presented the project at the 2018 Handwashing Behaviour Change Think Tank, coinciding with Global Handwashing Day. He said the unique collaboration between organisations represented a new way of working within the sector, helping to tackle complex challenges which require a range of expertise.

Martin said:

“We are confident that this style of working will ultimately create greater outcomes in effective handwashing, supporting refugees and displaced people in times of crisis around the world.”

One step more towards our objective of creating a new handwashing unit that will help to safe lives across the globe
