Jengu responds to Covid 19 in the UK

The Covid19 pandemic has been a challenging time for everyone.

Since the outbreak, like most of the world the UK went into lock-down and schools had to remain shut with children often learning remotely or at school with corona prevention measures in place. As we began to open up, handwashing with soap and water played an important part in curtailing transmission. To support hand hygiene promotion in 2020, Arup’s Community Engagement programme funded the manufacture and deployment of 50 Jengu Handwashing Units. The units were used by people and organisations in need across the UK, from Bristol to London, Manchester and Newcastle.

30 Jengu’s were deployed in schools, 12 to homeless shelters and 8 were used by community organisations including a mountain rescue centre! Units were placed at the entrances to schools and classrooms, providing an instant handwashing solution without the need for additional plumbing. To inform the Jengu project, the development team gathered feedback as to what people thought of the unit. Children and adults alike found it a fun and worthwhile non-touch handwashing experience, reinforcing the need for effective hand hygiene to stay safe.

The units were beautifully made and safely assembled during the lock down by Alderman Tooling near Plymouth. Their flexibility and range of production processes allowed the units to be made and delivered quickly. Because Jengu doesn’t need to be plumbed in, once the water containers were filled, organisations could instantly provide handwashing with soap and water.
